Mixing DPH and MAOIs

Mixing DPH and MAOIs is unsafe and best avoided — TripSit rates this combination “Unsafe.” Low risk never means safe.

There is a significant risk of serotonin syndrome with this combination. Monoamine oxidase A inhibitors may extend and increase the anticholinergic effects of DPH. The combination increases each other’s side effects, such as drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, and headaches. Medical dosages are not reported to be of concern.

DPH (also known as Benadryl) and MAOIs (also known as some antidepressants, syrian rue).

• Avoid this combination — the safest choice is not to mix them.
• Start with much less than usual and go slow — you can always take more, never less.
